Getting started
Logging in
Visit evaluchat.com and sign in with your email address. Teacher accounts are set up by your school or programme administrator. If you do not have access yet, ask your administrator to create a teacher account for you.
The dashboard
After logging in, you land on the teacher workspace. The left panel is your chat interface, and the right panel shows the assignment list — a view of all students and their submission status.
Creating assignments
Note: Assignments are currently created through the admin interface. Teacher-facing assignment creation tools are coming soon.
Each assignment includes:
- Title — a clear name students will see on their dashboard.
- Prompt — the essay question or writing task.
- Coach system prompt — instructions for the AI coach that define its teaching style and guardrails.
- Assignment settings — word limits, due dates, and rubric.
Once created, the assignment appears on every assigned student's
/student page.
Reviewing student work
Submission list
The teacher dashboard shows each assignment with:
- Student name
- Status — Not started, In progress, Submitted, Abandoned
- Completion percentage
- Submission date (when completed)
Opening a submission
Click any student submission to open the submission view. This shows three panels:
- Chat transcript — the full conversation between the student and the AI coach, from opening message to final submission.
- Final canvas — the student's final essay or document as it was at the moment of submission.
- Engagement metrics — data about how the student worked (see below).
Engagement metrics explained
The platform tracks anonymous, aggregate writing behaviour to give you insight into how students are working. These metrics are designed to highlight genuine effort — not to replace your professional judgment.

| Keystrokes | Total key presses in the editor — an indicator of drafting volume |
| Writing bursts | Rapid typing events (10+ keystrokes in under 2 seconds) — suggest fluent composition |
| Canvas edits | Number of distinct edits made to the document |
| Paste count | How many times text was pasted into the editor |
| Paste ratio | Pasted characters as a percentage of total typed characters — a high ratio may indicate over-reliance on external sources |
Heads up: These metrics are best used as conversation starters, not definitive evidence. A student who pastes a lot may have been collecting research quotes, and a quiet session may mean they were thinking. Use the chat transcript to understand the context behind the numbers.
How the AI coach works
Every assignment starts with an automatic opening message from the AI coach. The coach is designed to use Socratic dialogue — it asks questions and guides thinking rather than writing answers for the student.
What the coach does:
- Asks clarifying questions about the student's thesis or argument
- Points out potential counterarguments or gaps in reasoning
- Suggests structural improvements to the essay
- Encourages revision and deeper thinking
- Stays in a coaching role — it never writes the essay for the student
The coach's behaviour is defined by the system prompt set when the assignment was created. You can tailor this to your subject area and teaching style.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see which students have started an assignment?
Yes. The dashboard shows each student's status: Not started, In progress, Submitted, or Abandoned.
Can students edit after submitting?
No. Submission locks the document. Students can view their work but cannot make further changes.
What happens to abandoned assignments?
Assignments marked as abandoned are still visible to the teacher. You can view the work done up to that point and decide how to follow up.
Can I communicate with students through the platform?
Currently the AI coach handles in-session guidance. Teacher messaging features are on the roadmap.
How is student data protected?
All data is transmitted over HTTPS. Authentication is handled by Supabase, and no student data is used to train external AI models. See our privacy policy for full details.
